We Have A Visitor Coming To Talk Careers
Flora Mitchell (Careers Officer)1 year ago

Hello Grey!

That’s right! We have a visitor coming to Greyyy!! An actual visitor who wants to see us! Ex-Grey woman Hannah Davies is coming to Durham with Colt Technology Services and will be in the Old Library 5pm – 7:30pm Monday 30th January. They’re here to answer any questions you have for them but to get things started here’s Colt

“Colt is a global telecommunications company, with offices in 19 countries and staff in Europe, North America and Asia. With customers including 18 of the top 25 global financial institutions, we aim to be the most customer oriented business in our industry. The scheme lasts 3 years and is rotational in nature and location, offering potential placements abroad. With opportunities available in marketing, sales, finance, security, HR and technology, the possibilities are endless! We welcome students with an honours degree in any discipline.

Grey students are being given the exclusive opportunity to meet graduates currently on the scheme, and ask any questions about the application process, our organisation and Colt graduate life. Drop in to Old Library at 5pm – 7:30pm on Monday 30th January.

Don’t forget to follow our Colt Graduate Scheme social accounts for all the latest information:

Twitter: @colt_graduates

Facebook: Colt Graduate Scheme”

This seems to be a week for doing stuff non-degree related! So if you’re not fancying working in your degree this is the week to try something new

  • Monday 30th January: Finding business information for non-business students 14:00 - 15:00 in the Billy B Shincliffe room – stuff for if you want to work in business/economics but don’t do a degree in the thing (if you do...idk probably not necessary)
  • Wednesday 1st February: Cracking Code - a beginner's guide to coding, a chance to learn a valuable skill from our pals at PwC 14:00 - 16:00 in CG66 (near Chemistry)
  • Thursday 2nd February: Finding legal information for non-lawyers at 11:00 – 12:00 in Billy B – outlining legal info and where to find it (spoiler alert: try the Billy B)

Drop ins

  • Colt Technology Services will be in the Calman Cafe to chat about their Grad Scheme on Tuesday 31st January.
  • They’ll also be with us on Monday 30th 17:00 – 19:30 in the Old Library

As per usual the Careers Website is here for all your careers needs.

And look, see, I have produced a speaker! Tell me who you want to see -

If I can’t help you know who can – it’s the Grey Angels!

You can find them here and ask anything. A Grey student told me only this week that she has emailed one and now she has work experience in London! This Could Be You!

So you have been briefed! All the info is here if you need it. And even if you don’t come have a chat to Colt on Monday, hear about the working world from someone who has sat where you’re sitting, walked where you walk, complained about the same potatoes as you complain about. She seems to be doing something she’s really enjoying – why shouldn’t you?

Wishing you Greytness,

Ready for an Epiphany?

Hello Grey!

Welcome back! I trust you all had acceptable Christmases and New Years and are ready and raring to go! It's still not too late to apply for Careers events - these can be found on our lovely Careers Website

I am also hoping to organise some Careers events (some already on the horizon...) so I would really appreciate you telling me what you want. Tell me things! -

Finally (before your regularly scheduled Careers events) please talk to the Grey Angels!

They are an excellent source of careers info we have here at Grey: they are happy to offer you advice or answer questions and help you learn about Careers but you have to contact them first! You can find them here and so I say go now! Talk to them!

A few snapshots to some of the events we have coming up (it’s good to be back isn’t it?)

  • Monday 23rd January: Mock Interviews 13:00 - 16:00 in the Careers Room run by good ol’ PwC. Many of you have been asking for this! Here’s your chance
  • Wednesday 25th January: Assessment Centre Techniques – these will be being offered as we speak (well, I write) so get to wherever they decide it’ll be held at 16:00 - 18:00 to arm yourselves!
  • Thursday 26th January: Life at the Criminal Bar at 16:00 – 17:00 in PCL054 – one for you lawyers as two ex-Durham barristers (one commercial fraud, one criminal) come and offer inside info about ‘the room where it happens’ (pause as I weep over lack of Hamilton tickets)

Drop ins

Some companies are coming to say hey! They are both here Thursday 26th January

  • Willis Towers Watson are bringing a game called the High Flyers Challenge to the Calman Cafe 09:00 – 17:00. Apparently it is a chance to both be a high flyer (guiding an air balloon with a friend) and become a high flyer (win a hot air balloon trip). Not sure how this relates to risk management and brokering but ahh well
  • Unlocked Graduates are looking for 2nd, penultimate or final year (I imagine a mixture thereof) students in the Law school foyer 11:00 – 12:30 and 12:30 – 14:00 outside the Careers Centre to talk about graduate roles as a prison officer

MyTutor want you! Make money from your room (not click-bait)

The people at MyTutor are especially interested in you lot (unexpected) and have come to me for a special shout-out. They say,

MyTutor – take home £10-£16 per hour tutoring GCSEs and A-Levels from your bedroom!

If you're looking for a bit of extra cash and a flexible, part-time job that you can fit around your degree then check out MyTutor – it hires students from Durham and they’re currently looking for more students to sign up ahead of exam season. Your role as a tutor is basically to give online, one-to-one tuition to GCSE and A-level students.

It's really flexible as to where and when you work (you can literally tutor from your bedroom) - it’ll give you some great transferable CV skills and the minimum starting pay is £10 an hour, which is much higher than most student jobs!

Get in contact with Heather ( if you have any questions, or sign up online at”

They also have an additional role if working with disadvantaged students in schools which might be of particular interest to future teachers – again, for info, Get in contact with Heather (

Sound good? Well what are you waiting for! Get involved!

Phew! And that’s all for now folks! Hope everyone is settling back down ok. Get started on those applications, accept that assessment day, prepare for that interview and (most importantly) remember its now 2017. Anything can happen.

Wishing you Greytness,

Come all ye Greyful

Hello Grey!

Christmas is fast approaching and I know that all I want for Christmas is Careers Events! (Just kidding what I actually want for Christmas is a guarenteed grad job but I feel like earrings will have to do).

They may not be leading shepherds to Bethlehem to pursue a baby but they can help you pursue knowledge - so Hark the Herald Grey Angels sing!

The Events

A shockingly bad turnout from the Events! A single

  • Skills Workshop: Mock Interviews - Preparing for Success on Monday 12th December 13:00 - 16:15 in the Careers Centre

And that's it! The bleak midwinter indeed. But cheer up plans are being made for Careers events next term! I can promise nothing but I'm thinking mock interviews, speakers, CV advice? Sound like a plan? Well then let me know what you want on the Google form - as this will form the basis for what is planned.

This will probably be the last post of the Michaelmas term from me so all that is left is for me to wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

With tidings of comfort and joy...

Wishing you Greytness,

Looking forward

Hello Grey!

It's two weeks to the end of term and those summatives are hotting up! To take your mind of your future have a look at some Careers Events (sorry that was low). If that is too time consuming why don't you email one of the Grey Angels! It's precisely the kind of activity that is productive but can be done quickly.

The Events

Only Monday - Wednesday I'm afraid this week but got some real crackers (yes! Can finally make Christmas puns!)

Monday 5th October

  • 13:00 - 15:00: Skills Workshop: Understanding Your Personality run by Mars in Collingwood Boardroom (it's close, distance is no excuse)

Tuesday 6th October

  • 9:00 - 13:00: Employer dropin - PWS Distributor want scientists and engineers and will have coffee in the Calman Cafe

Wednesday 7th October

  • 13:00 - 16:00: Work Experience Forum 2016 - held in CLC407, another chance to learn about work expperience opportunities available
  • 16:00 - 18:00: Understanding Your Business Finances Workshop - Harland Accountants in CLC202 to chat about financial management (if you're into that)
  • 18:30 - 20:30: Train to be a teacher at Durham - a talk about Durham's PGCE in CLC407

Sound good? If that's too time consuming can I recommend the Google form - It can take less than 5 seconds (probably?)

Otherwise, for those with Linkedin have a peruse here. This is the Durham connections page, with lots of good thought.

If you don't have Linkedin - get Linkedin

Good luck with those summatives Grey, just power on through, we're almost at Christmas. See you at IB where I for one will enjoy thinking about the past not the future.

Wishing you Greytness,

A few events for you to sample...

Hello Grey!

Another week has come and (shout out to the Americans amongst you) Happy Thanksgiving! What are you thankful for? That essay being formative? That lecture cancelled? That housemate who washed up your pan? I, of course, am thankful for yet more Careers Events (or that's what my contract says I should say) so go check them out.

We are somewhat low on Careers Events this week (you'll be pleased to hear, I am obviously devastated for what else will brighten my day?) but you know who is always a good source of Careers information? The Grey Angels! Our Alumni friends are still ready and willing to offer advice so take advantage of them - have a look!

The Events

We're winding down a little on quantity but the quality is still high

Wishing you Greytness,

Angels and Lawyers

Hello Grey
Flora Mitchell (Careers Officer)1 year ago

Greetings Grey!

I'm Flora your brand new Careers Officer. Wanted to say thanks to everyone who voted and that if you have any queries I am here to help. I can't read through your CV (although the Uni Careers office can and will do a much better job than I ever could) but I can offer advice on who to go to and promote opportunities for you! And that's what I'm doing now.

So what Careers Events do we have this week? Well turns out a lot. You can find them all here but here are some of the highlights.

After the success of last weeks fair there's more subject specific ones coming up in weeks to come. Keep an out for the two-day STEM fair on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th after next week.

Company Shout Out

Some companies are just so gosh darn keen that they send individual messages to our Pres asking for a shout out specifically to Grey. This week...

CIL Management Consultancy based in London and South West (Frome in the Bath area) are a "boutique consultancy" with a big M&A element who pride themselves on being "socially equal, lively and inclusive" with structured teams but not cliques.

They are recruiting for:

  1. Graduates starting September 2017
  2. Summer interns for penultimate year students
  3. Insight days in November

Like the sound of that? Find them here

Well that's all for now folks. Have a good week and have a Spooky Halloween (ahhh!! Job Applications!!)

All the best,
